How Long is Copyright Protected?
The term of protection lasts for the lifetime of the author and for 70 years after their death.
If the author is a legal entity, the term of protection is 70 years from the date of publication. For works published after the author’s death, the term of protection is 70 years from the date of death.
If the author of the work is unknown, the term of protection is 70 years from the date the work was made public.
The term of protection does not commence until the work is made public.
Upon expiry of the term of protection, the economic rights granted to the author cease. Therefore, works whose term of protection has expired may be freely used without the author’s permission.
